by : Ismail Azmi

It may be a popular myth that acne only affect adolescent teenagers, but it is just not true, actually acne is very common in adult too. Acne could affect many adults; it can persist right into our 30s and 40s. In fact, as many as as half of all adult women and around one quarter of adult men are likely to suffer acne in their adulthood. Stress and Hormonal changes are considered to be the main cause of adult acne. That’s why women are more frequently affected. Women undergo various hormonal changes throughout their adult lives, it is a biological fact. Menstruation, pregnancy and menopause are the most often factors that trigger acne for adult women.

There are various adult acne medications that specially designed to meet the needs of adult acne sufferers.

Benzoyl peroxide, due to their proven effectiveness in reducing the severity of the acne, and effective in minimizing the possibility of future scarring, become the front line adult acne product as recommended by many dermatologists.

Topical medications

Besides benzoyl peroxide, other most common ingredients available in acne topical medications are salicylic acid or retinoid; they come with lotions, creams or gels. They are useful in treating mild acne. However they are less effective in treating moderate to severe adult acne. However, especially, when used in combination with other topical therapies, retinoids can be effective. When Salicylic acid at over the counter is combined with benzoyl peroxide, they could be useful at fighting blackheads that can lead to acne.

Oral medications

For generations, oral antibiotic treatments have been a basis in treating acne. Unluckily, antibiotic treatments do not attack the root cause of acne, and unlike benzoyl peroxide combined with salicilyc acid, oral antibiotic treatments have no beneficial pore-clearing effect. You should avoid oral antibiotic treatments; they could wreak havoc on your system with little benefit.

Accutane, a very effective oral medication, is the most powerful oral medication for adult acne. Before taking this medicine, you need to consult your dermatologist first. Your doctor should monitor while taking this drugs, since there are serious potential side effects in this medication. And accutane should only be considered as a last resort after all other medications have failed.
